Idaho Vandals Wide Receiver Ken McRoyal died this morning in California.
McRoyal, 22, played in eight games in 2011 as a walk-on and was given a scholarship for the 2012 season.
In his latest Facebook post, McRoyal said, "Back to Cali to spend time with my daughter, Memorial day BBQ with my family, and work out 24/7."
Prior to coming to UI, McRoyal played at El Camino Junior College and Carson High School where he played with Idaho quarterback Dominique Blackman.
The cause of death has not been confirmed by UI media relations, but they did release a statement Sunday morning with quotes from Athletic Director Rob Spear and coach Robb Akey.
"It’s a devastating loss," coach Robb Akey said. "We’ve lost a brother, a teammate, a family member. But, more importantly, a momma lost her son today."

The nationwide economy has put many of Idaho’s budget items on the chopping block during the past few years. With many Idahoans out of work, the salaries of top-paid state employees come under direct scrutiny.
Guessing Idaho’s governor is the state’s highest paid employee is 262 times wrong. While it seems logical that the most powerful man in the state would be the highest paid, Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter’s $115,348 publically funded salary does not even put him among the top 10 at either of the state’s two largest universities.
All of the top 10 highest paid public employees work in higher education, and seven of them are involved in the Boise State athletics program. The highest paid employee at the University of Idaho is President M. Duane Nellis, whose $335,004 salary puts him fourth in the state.

The University of Idaho provides a number of free and low-cost events for students, faculty, staff and community members that are rare in other areas, but many students do not always take advantage of these opportunities.
The cost to host these events varies, but it is rare for UI’s Moscow campus to go a week without an event produced by one of the university’s departments or ASUI’s Vandal Entertainment. Additionally, spaces on campus such as the Kibbie Dome and Student Union Building ballroom allow UI to generate revenue by renting them for events unrelated to the university.
University groups host the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival, Palousafest, Finals Fest, various cultural events, the Borah Symposium and a variety of Vandal Entertainment events such as comedians, musicians, movies and magic acts.

Students have the opportunity to get involved with the Women’s Center and everything it does by becoming an intern.
The application process is informal — a meeting with Heather Gasser, the director of the Women’s Center, is all it takes. If students want to intern for the blog or Yin Radio, a formal application needs to be filled out.
Several intern opportunities are offered through the Women’s Center, Gasser said. Academic credit can be earned through the University of Idaho’s sociology department, but other colleges can be a part of the intern program as well, Gasser said, such as students in graphic design or the school of Journalism and Mass Media.

Each year students pay about $250 of their dedicated student activity fee to attend all athletic events hosted on the University of Idaho campus. The annual cost to host those events is more than $600,000, which makes student fee dollars seem like a drop in the $18 million athletics budget bucket.
"The student fee money that we get — about $2.32 million … doesn’t cover all of that but we appreciate the money," said Matt Kleffner, senior associate athletic director.
The money to host athletic events comes out of the multi-million dollar budget that is funded by a number of entities. Funding for the athletics department includes ticket sales for events, guarantees (the money paid by other institutions to host UI teams for their own athletic events), student fees and direct state government and institutional support. Athletics also receives a large portion of its budget from donors, the NCAA/Western Athletic Conference, media rights, concessions, advertisements and sponsorship, endowment, and other smaller items such as parking and program/novelty sales.

Twenty-five University of Idaho undergraduate students shoot experimental capsules 90,000 feet into the atmosphere each semester — no big deal. But the student-led class broke ground this semester with its plan for a live payload.
Students enrolled in Near Space Engineering II spent months designing, testing and building equipment to launch unborn fish toward the stratosphere. The student-run experiment, called Fishnauts, involves aspects of biology, physics, engineering and other sciences.
Joshua Egan, a recent graduate in fisheries resources, said he serves as a biological consultant, more commonly the "fish guy."

The family of 22-year-old graduate student Katy Benoit and the University of Idaho announced they have reached a settlement following the tort claim filed by the Benoits in December.
Benoit was killed Aug. 22 by former UI assistant professor Ernesto A. Bustamante.
The settlement resulted in a monetary amount currently unreleased until the documents have been officially signed by all parties, which should occur Friday, according to university spokesman Judd Wilson.
The following improvements on behalf of the university will also occur as a result of the settlement:
- Improved communication and procedural operations with Moscow Police Department
- Development of improved communication for a procedure to allow students and faculty to safely, securely and anonymously report harmful/inappropriate activities occurring at the university
- Improved sexual harassment training for students, staff and faculty
- Creation of an annual on-campus forum dedicated to safety, value-based decision making, rights and responsibility
The Benoit family will donate all proceeds from the settlement to charity, primarily the Katy Benoit Memorial Fund established through the Idaho Community Foundation.
More information to come as available.

The State Board of Education will meet on the University of Idaho campus Wednesday and Thursday in the Student Union Building ballroom. The board will deliver a final decision regarding the proposed 6.1 percent increase in tuition.
UI President M. Duane Nellis, ASUI President Samantha Perez and Keith Ickes, executive director planning and budget, will have 20 minutes at Wednesday’s meeting to present the proposed increase and persuade the board it is necessary for university operations.
"I think at this point in time we’ve answered a number of questions that they’ve had, they’ve seen the material in advance and we’re very hopeful they’ve listened to our discussion and feel that it’s an appropriate and reasonable request," Ickes said.

It’s expected that Idaho’s flagship university maintains high-quality faculty to ensure a high-quality education. The University of Idaho’s tenure policy is designed to ensure such faculty, but not everyone is sold on its significance.
Denise Bennett, newly tenured senior instructor in the School of Journalism and Mass Media, said she might be too fresh to the process to understand tenure’s meaning for her, but times have changed. Old fears of career repercussions for controversial discussions or behaviors in academia don’t pervade our current era, she said.
"I don’t know (that) the tenure system works in today’s world," she said. "At least from my experience here, I don’t think there’s pressure on faculty to not deal with certain course content."

The polls for ASUI elections are now open until 4 p.m. Thursday due to a communication error between ASUI and ITS about which students are eligible to vote.
Hannah Blankenship, ASUI communication board chair, said some eligible students thought they were ineligible.
"In order to vote, students must be undergraduate and taking a minimum of 12 credits," Blankenship said. "A lot of international students were having trouble, but it's not because they're international."
Blankenship said the polls are currently down, but ASUI is working with ITS to get them back up within the hour.
"We really encourage students to keep checking back if they haven't voted already," she said.
ASUI will announce the election results Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Idaho Commons rotunda.

It’s nearing midnight on Sunday before your final exam. Coffee in hand, you decide to go through your Spanish flashcards one more time. A three-week-old email from your Spanish instructor sits in your inbox, reminding you to fill out her instructor evaluation before the clock strikes 12 a.m. Your caffeine-surged hand shakes as you close your laptop, ignoring her request, and head to the kitchen to cook some Top Ramen. It’s going to be a long night.
"(The online student evaluations of teaching systems) are used a lot more than students realize," said Archie George, director of University of Idaho Institutional Research and Assessment. "If students knew that, they’d be more inclined to fill it out."
The IRA carries out policy and development of the online SET system, which replaced paper evaluations in the early 2000s. The digital format improved the reach of instructor surveys to off-campus students and cut a five-week process of sorting, scanning, compiling and distributing more than 32,000 forms. Issues with the current system include abnormal course dates, student log-ins and technology issues.
