President Barack Obama on Monday acknowledged "risks" in his decision to withdraw U.S. combat forces from Afghanistan by the end of 2014 but said war-weary Americans can't wait for that strife-torn country to be "perfect." "I don't think that there is ever going to be an optimal point where we say, this is all done, this is perfect, this is just the way we wanted it and now we can wrap up all our equipment and go home," Obama said at a press conference at the end of a two-day NATO summit in his hometown of Chicago. Obama also said the Pentagon isn't giving him an unrealistically rosy picture of Afghanistan. "I can't afford a white-wash. I can't afford not getting the very best information in order to make good decisions." "I should add, by the way, that the danger a lot of times is not that anybody is purposely trying to downplay challenges in Afghanistan. A lot of times it's just the military culture is 'we can get it done.'  And so, their thinking is, 'how are...

At the close of the NATO Summit, taking questions from reporters, President Obama launched his most direct attack yet at challenger Mitt Romney, defending his campaign’s attacks on Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital and full-throatedly saying "this is what this campaign is going to be...

text What Bain Capital Left Out Of Its Ampad Defense
Mon, 21 May 2012 18:48:11 -0400
ABC News’ Michael Falcone reports: After the Obama campaign unleashed another attack Monday on Mitt Romney’s business dealings at Bain Capital, the private equity firm went on defense. But Bain’s public statement is as notable for what it included as it is for what it left...

In the spotlight of the world stage, President Barack Obama on Monday unapologetically defended his campaign's attacks on Mitt Romney's record at the private equity firm Bain Capital and vowed to keep up the onslaught all the way to November. "This issue is not a distraction," Obama defiantly declared at a press conference wrapping up a NATO summit in his hometown of Chicago. "This is what this campaign is going to be about." "If your main argument for how to grow the economy is 'I knew how to make a lot of money for investors,' then you're missing what this job is about," the president said, evidently relishing the opportunity to knock Romney. "It doesn't mean you weren't good at private equity, but that's not what my job is as president. My job is to take into account everybody, not just some. My job is to make sure that the country is growing not just now, but ten years from now and 20 years from now," he said. Obama's campaign has drawn fire, including from...

text Obama to deliver commencement address in Joplin
Mon, 21 May 2012 18:08:00 -0400
President Barack Obama will address the 2012 graduating class of Joplin High School Monday night at the school's commencement ceremony. The address comes almost one year after severe tornadoes devastated the Missouri town. Obama visited Joplin on May 29, 2011 to view the damage and participate in a memorial service for victims of the storm. "We can't know why we're tested with the loss of a loved one, or the loss of a home where we've lived a lifetime," Obama said last May. "These things are beyond our power to control. But that does not mean we are powerless in the face of adversity. How we respond when the storm strikes is up to us. How we live in the aftermath of tragedy and heartache, that's within our control." The graduation ceremony takes place this evening between 7-9:30 p.m. CT. Yahoo News will be streaming the ABC News coverage of the speech. More popular Yahoo!
